The Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) has awarded a substantial grant to support the development and production of the community play "Land of Liberty."

Robyn Llewellyn, Head of HLF East of England, said “We want to get people excited about the history on their doorstep. The Heronsgate Estate has a wealth of stories to tell about its past and this funding will help bring it to life for everyone who takes part in the project.”

Produced by cultural organisation, Parrabbola, in partnership with Three Rivers District Council and the Hertfordshire World Arts Platform, the project will involve numerous local volunteers from the communities of Mill End, Maple Cross and Heronsgate in a year-long exploration of the history of the area.

Parrabbola will work with local people to develop the play through a series of workshops over the summer and autumn, focussing on research, creative writing, performance skills, technical theatre, design and marketing, all leading towards the performance in the spring of 2011.

Councillor Ann Shaw OBE, Leader of Three Rivers District Council, said "We have now heard the good news that the funding application to the Heritage Lottery Fund for the development of the community project 'Land of Liberty' has been successful. I am sure all those involved will be delighted."

The Land of Liberty project team are actively recruiting interested people who can get involved at any level they like. For more information or to find out how to get involved, please contact Ricky Manning on 01923 776611 or see the entry on the World Arts Platform website
